Welcome to New Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) Students!

Dear Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) Student,

On behalf of Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight)’s faculty, staff and students, I would like to congratulate you on your acceptance to UCSC and your enrollment in our college.

Rachel Carson College's (formerly College Eight) theme, “Environment and Society,” embodies the college’s concern about environmental issues, within a social, political, scientific and humanistic context.  The College has a vigorous intellectual life, with core and other courses designed to this end. Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) is also an exciting community, with students actively augmenting their academic training through a large variety of extra-curricular activities.  Rachel Carson College's (formerly College Eight) students major in almost every discipline offered at UCSC, while being strongly committed to environmental stewardship.  Be sure to browse our web site at http://eight.ucsc.edu

Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) schedules small, two-unit classes on a range of topics, designed to provide students with practical, hands-on skills and valuable networks for the future.  The College sponsors an interdisciplinary Minor in Sustainability Studies, designed to provide students with both classroom and hands-on experiential learning for the coming green economy.  You can find out more about the minor at http://TINYURL.COM/MZS86TR.

For frosh, Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight)’s three-unit, Fall Quarter plenary class offers a singular opportunity for you and your fellow frosh to gather in one place every week (this won’t happen again until you graduate). The class focuses on “California Environment and Society.” You will also be taking a required 5-unit core writing class during Fall Quarter which, with the Plenary, equals 8 units (out of the normal load of 12-19 units for full-time enrollment).  For more details, consult our “Academics” page at http://eight.ucsc.edu/academic-programs/index.html.  Be sure to check out the Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) Wiki, too, at http://www.ic.ucsc.edu/college8core/c8wiki/index.php/College_Eight_Core.

Be on the lookout for an email from the Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) Advising Office arriving in mid-June.  (Please set your email program not to treat our messages as junk or spam.) In that email, you will find important information regarding enrolling for Fall classes. As soon as you are able, activate your UCSC student Gmail account, since that will be our primary means of communicating with you once Fall Quarter begins.

The mission of staff and faculty at Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) is to see that you succeed in your academic career and at UCSC, and to prepare you for the future.  Do not hesitate to come see us when you visit and once you get settled in the fall.  We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you personally to the Rachel Carson College (formerly College Eight) Community.

All the best,

Ronnie D. Lipschutz
